Reports of Rising Police-Society Conflict in China

Abstract

Reports of Rising Police-Society Conflict in China

Suzanne Scoggins, Clark University

Much like the United States, China is facing a rising tide of conflict between the nation’s police officers and the public. While protest events receive considerable attention from the press, lower-level “everyday” conflicts between police officers and residents also make their way onto the internet, shaping perceptions of the police. This study analyzes those interactions and maps the location, frequency, causes, and resolutions of everyday conflict between the public and the police. The results provide insight into the nature of state-society conflict in China and the challenges faced by local state law enforcement.
