Twenty NARP fellows are selected in a competitive, nationwide process, to conduct policy-relevant research on national security issues. A $10,000 stipend awarded to each fellow supports the fellows’ work over their term, during which they remain at their home institutions. The NARP fellows receive training to develop skills necessary to conduct policy-relevant research and deliver their research to the policy community, including honing skills in briefing, memorandum writing, and media engagement. Each NARP fellow publishes research findings in peer-reviewed academic and policy journals. Fellows are provided opportunities to engage with government policymakers and brief them on their research.

The Advisory Council bridges academia and policymakers to establish research priorities for the NARP. The group provides substantive input into scoping the policy-relevant research topics the NARP fellows address and recommends promising rising scholars for the program. The Advisory Council oversees the application process for choosing the NARP fellows, evaluating candidates based on the selection criteria and key research topics before making final decisions on the NARP fellow awards.

The fellowship application period for the National Asia Research Program 2019 has ended.
